Why leadership matters in times of uncertainty by Dr Raja Al Gurg

As the UAE begins to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, undoubtedly one of the most exceptional calamities of our lifetimes, we have all witnessed first-hand how strong leadership can define effective crisis navigation. In a similar vein, astute leadership will also define the success and expediency of our collective recovery.

The people and residents of the Emirates have been fortunate to follow progressive and visionary leaders in the first 50 years of our country’s existence. From the start of our national journey, Sheikh Zayed along with the visionary leaders of the six emirates began shaping, creating and building the UAE. The Father of the Nation evoked trust, transparency, agility and compassion – characteristics of leadership which remain equally relevant today.

Sheikh Zayed’s belief that a nation’s people are its most valuable resource has been evident in the resilience and decisiveness of the UAE Government’s response to the pandemic. UAE’s vaccination drive highlights the country as a pioneer in crisis management, with over 12 million doses being delivered and 62% of the population now vaccinated.

The speed of the vaccination response was paired with extensive economic stimulus packages, new reforms on foreign business ownership and, most recently, the launch of ‘Dubai Next’ – a digital crowdfunding platform to financially support start-ups. These innovative steps to support individuals and businesses demonstrates the Government’s unwavering and steadfast support of the community. It is an example of strong leadership ensuring the country recovers quickly and resolutely.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, once said: “A great leader creates more great leaders and does not reduce the institution to a single person.” This quote underlines why strong leadership is critical in a crisis: while leadership provides clear strategy and action, it also inspires.

At the Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group and across our business portfolio, we are committed to following this example. Our ongoing efforts contribute to the wider vision of the UAE and the country’s leadership. We aim to confront all challenges with trust, transparency and compassion. These are the same values that continue to set the UAE apart – even in the bleakest of unforeseen and unexpected crises, they continue to inspire us.
